'My sense of ease, I think, came from working at the Wilmot Downs racetrack in Fredericton from an early age, when I stabled my horse, Missy... The barn also housed numerous weathered relics, racetrack men who were usually peacefully drunk on whisky. I always felt safe with them, and I was. My job was collecting urine from the winning horse on race nights for drug testing. I was handed a cup on the end of a long stick, and as the steaming, sinewy horse was hosed off, I had to hold the cup strategically and whistle. Those were happy days, my coming-of-age years at the old racetrack, on late nights that smelled of French fries and horse liniment.
